Memorandum

_____________________________________________________________________________

Subject:

INFORMATION: FAA Safety Recommendations 99.283 and 99.284

Date: January 13, 2000

From:

Associate ACO, Manager Systems & Propulsion Wichita Aircraft Certification Office, ACE-116W

Reply to R. Adamson

To:

Manager, Recommendation & Quality Assurance Division, AAI-200

The Wichita ACO is considering these recommendations and is consulting with the Type Certificate holder, Cessna Aircraft Company on these items. We have requested and received pertinent correspondence and data showing compliance to the applicable regulations.

However, based on the history and nature of this particular case, one of our Aviation Safety Engineers has been assigned to review with Cessna their data and findings of compliance to the pertinent type certification requirements. Many years have past since the original certification of the Cessna Model 172 fuel system and all findings of compliance in this area were accomplished under a Delegated Option Authorization (DOA). As such, we believe this particular case warrants our direct review of their design and substantiating documents to ensure a complete investigation of this particular case. We expect this review to be completed in the next several weeks.

If you have any questions or need additional information regarding these issues, please contact Mr. Robert Adamson, ACE-116W at (316) 946-4145.

James M. Peterson
